Wesley Dean, M.D., FAAFP, FAWM

A Knoxville native, Dr. Dean graduated from the University of Tennessee Knoxville. He attended medical school at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center - Memphis and completed his residency at St. Francis Hospital in Memphis. He formed Emory Family Practice in 1989 with Dr. Ronald Barton and is a founding member of Summit Medical Group where he continues to be active in its leadership. He is Board Certified in Family Medicine and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians (FAAFP). He is a past president of the Tennessee Academy of Family Physicians and remains active in both the state and national academies. Dr. Dean has completed a fellowship in wilderness medicine (FAWM) through the Wilderness Medical Society. He enjoys numerous outdoor activities including hiking, cycling, landscaping and is an avid golfer. Dr. Dean resides in the Powell community where he attends church and is active in its Music ministry as a drummer. 

Brad Flaming, M.D., FAAFP

Dr. Flaming is originally from Ashland, Kentucky. He received his undergraduate degree from Transylvania University (in Lexington, KY) and his medical degree from the University of Louisville, Kentucky. He completed his residency at the University of Tennessee Knoxville Medical Center in Family Practice. He is board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians (FAAFP). He joined Emory Family Practice in 1993 and was a founding member of Summit Medical Group. Dr. Flaming lives in Powell and enjoys hiking, fly-fishing, music, church and family activities.

Kathy Chism, M.D. (Photo not posted)

Dr. Chism is a native of Asheville, North Carolina. She graduated from Wake Forest University with a bachelors and masters degree in Biology and received her medical degree from the University of North Carolina–Chapel Hill. She completed her residency at the University of Tennessee Knoxville Medical Center in Family Practice, where she served as chief resident. Dr. Chism is board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine. She joined Emory Family Practice in 1999. She lives in the Powell area and enjoys music, theater and dogs.

Nick Thornton, M.D.

A native of Brownsville, Tennessee, Dr. Thornton graduated from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville with a bachelors degree in Biomedical Engineering. He received his medical degree from ETSU Quillen College of Medicine in Johnson City, Tennessee. He completed his residency at the University of Tennessee Knoxville Medical Center in Family Practice. He is board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine. He joined Emory Family Practice in 2004. Dr. Thornton resides in the Halls area with his wife and 3 children. They attend Fellowship Church and he enjoys traveling and playing golf.

Sherrie Jenkins, MSN, APN-BC

Sherrie joined the practice 2 years ago after relocating with her family to Powell from Cleveland Tennessee. She began her nursing career in 1987 after graduating from Cleveland State Community College with her associate degree. She worked for the first 20 years of her career as registered nurse in acute care settings including CV SICU, ER, cardiac cath lab, PACU and nursing management. She obtained her undergraduate degree from East Tennessee State University and completed her graduate studies at Southern Adventist University in Collegedale, Tennessee where she earned a Master of Nursing as a Family Nurse Practitioner. She is board certified through the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Since 2008 she has been working as an FNP in urgent care and family practice settings. Professional Associations include the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, Honors Society of Nursing of Sigma Theta Tau international and Rho Iota chapters. She enjoys basketball, boating, landscaping and home renovation projects and activities with family and friends.

Carlie Mullen, FNP-C 

Carlie grew up in Knoxville and graduated from the University of Tennessee with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. She worked as a cardiology Registered Nurse while completing her Masters degree at Clemson University. She is board certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner through the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. She and her husband welcomed their new son in February of 2018. They enjoy Tennessee sports, playing with their nieces and nephew, traveling, and spending time in the Smoky Mountains. 

Sara Hughes, MPA, PA-C

Sara is a Knoxville native who returned to the area in 2017 after several years away. She    earned her Bachelor of Science in Psychology degree from East Tennessee State University in    2008. She then earned her Master of Physician Assistant (PA) degree from Eastern Virginia  Medical  School, in Norfolk, VA, in 2011. She is certified through the National Commission  on Certification of Physician Assistants and has worked professionally as a PA in  emergency medicine as well as dermatology. She enjoys primary care but  continues to have  a particular interest in dermatology, and enjoys integrating that knowledge into Emory  Family Practice. She enjoys being involved in the PA community and helping mentor  upcoming PA's. Sara is married to her college sweetheart and they have one child. She  enjoys  music, both playing and listening, and loves being outside biking, hiking, boating,  and traveling. 

Jenny Miller, APRN-BC

Jenny has lived in Knoxville her entire life. She completed her undergraduate studies in Biology from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. After working in pediatrics for a few years, she finished her Masters in Nursing also at UT. Since 2004, she has been working at Interfaith Health Clinic helping the uninsured population in Knoxville. She only works part time at Emory since joining the practice in 2016. Jenny is married to a pastor who also serves as the Character Coach with UT's Football Program. She has two young children and enjoys her church, friends, hiking, biking, camping, and woodworking.

Ronald Barton, M.D. ( Retired )

Dr. Barton is a founding member of Emory Family Practice and Summit Medical Group.

Dr. Barton retired in July, 2018, after 29 years with the practice.
